Neurodivergent parenting

can be hard...I know!

If you've navigated your way to this page, it's likely because you are deeply concerned about your child or feel at a loss due to the toll of neurodivergent parenting. Odds are there is a child in your life suffering from anxiety, depression, selective eating, sensory processing difficulties, or diagnosed with PANS/PANDAS/AE, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD), Conduct Disorder (CD), Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD), Reactive Attachment Disorder, etc.

Maybe you are already in that group of families who have tried a long list of recommended therapies and found that, for the most part, it was not helpful enough, at least not for long.
If the above describes you, I have a clue about how you feel.
Parenting is especially difficult when a neurodivergent child experiences symptoms of an overactive nervous system that get labeled as “behavioral issues” or “psychiatric disorders.”
Since 2016 I have worked with PANDAS/PANS families with the most complex circumstances.
In 2018, my own family joined the PANS journey.

Dr. Odelya Gertel Kraybill

As a trauma researcher, psychotherapist, neurodivergent parenting specialist, and double PANS mom, I am dedicated to supporting individuals and families who encounter complex mental health circumstances.

As a PANS mom, I aim to provide parents with valuable information about the importance of an appropriate intervention timeline, raise awareness about PANDAS/PANS/AE, and offer hope to families navigating these complex conditions.

As a survivor of developmental and complex trauma born and raised in Israel, my mission is to support individuals and families in the journey of trauma integration, targeting all aspects of health and offering you a path toward wellness.

My primary tools for interacting with clients are rooted in attachment-based psychotherapy, neuroscience, and expressive therapies. Additionally, I have researched and self-studied nutritional psychology and integrative psychotherapy to broaden my approach.

I have developed the ETI approach based on three pillars: experiential psychoeducation (Six Stages Trauma Integration Roadmap), Secure Attunement Framework, and Individual Sustainability Plans in order to identify the root causes and biohack dysregulation (PTSD).

Biohacking involves using knowledge and practices from biology, genetics, neuroscience, and nutrition, translating to "Do-It-Yourself practices."

This work has led me to focus on the interactions between emotional states, nervous system function, and the immune system, an area known as Psychoneuroimmunology. This interdisciplinary field is crucial for understanding complex neurological and neuropsychiatric symptoms that do not respond to standard therapies.

I consult individuals and families with complex mental health conditions, investigate root causes, and tailor short—and long-term intervention plans. I often collaborate with specialists to target all aspects of health toward maximum wellness.

I understand the challenges of parenting children in complex situations. I experienced medical gaslighting and gaslighting by other professionals, family, and friends, which was confusing and painful.

With two decades of experience, I am here to provide hope and competence to help you navigate your way forward.

WHAT PARENTS SAY

J. & M. PANDAS Parents

This series helped us understand for the first time what we are dealing with.
Understanding the right timing for interventions in dealing with PANDAS/PANS has transformed our approach and led to improvements in our overall well-being.

S. PANS Mom

I've gained a deep understanding of how PANDAS/PANS can be the underlying cause of mental health diagnoses. This insight helped me learn what causes meltdowns and how to respond to them effectively.

.

T. & L., PANS/AE Parents

This series was a lifeline for us as parents of a child with complex PANS/AE. It taught us how to create a tailored plan to improve all aspects of our child's health at the same time, and this made a real difference. The focus on self-compassion helped us not only understand but really-feel that we are doing our best in a challenging and complex situation.

1. Designing Intervention Plans

Parents often invest a considerable amount of time and resources in various forms of therapy for their children. While these therapies may provide some relief initially, they often fail to bring long-term stability.
It's essential to consider the right time and approach for each type of intervention. Even when the timing is appropriate, a single form of therapy may not be sufficient to achieve the necessary stability.
It's crucial to address all aspects of health simultaneously, including emotional, cognitive, physical, spiritual, and social aspects.

Presentation includes:

  • What PANDAS/PANS/AE individuals and families need to know about the nervous system and immune system from a psychoneuroimmunology perspective.

  • What elements should therapy include for a child and family facing the debilitating impact of PANS/PANDAS/AE.

  • What is the optimal timeline to integrate interventions.

  • What is Parental PTSD and what is a sustainability plan.

2. Meltdown: Stress & Grounding

Parents of children with neuropsychiatric symptoms struggle to help them attain self-regulation and overall well-being. One of the most valuable steps parents can take is to help their children understand how the brain and nervous system work.
This type of information is psychoeducation. Age-appropriate psychoeducation helps children regain a sense of control when they experience symptoms that make them feel they are at the mercy of emotions they cannot control that are rooted in a hypernervous system.

Numerous studies and reports confirm the value of psychoeducation for clients with an overactive nervous system. Similarly, grasping this key information about how the brain reacts to stress can help children, parents, and caregivers make sense of reactions that otherwise seem overwhelming.

In addition to psychoeducating parents on how to give their children an understanding of brain mechanisms, the webinar will introduce grounding activities to help children break the cycle of nervous system activation and facilitate (sensory and bi-lateral integration) grounding.

Presentation includes:

  • Provide up-to-date information on how stress affects the nervous system including brain functioning, sensory processing, self-regulation, and capacity to differentiate past and present, and how to use this knowledge in day-to-day routines;

  • Understand how the immune system and nervous system are linked to meltdowns, attention deficits, school refusal, etc.

  • Provide basic tools for calming children when they are experiencing hyper-nervous system activation (meltdowns).

3. Food & Mood, Inflammation & Immunity

In this presentation, parents and caregivers will delve into the connections between nutrition and lifestyle and their profound impact on anxiety, mood, focus, attention, and retention.

Moreover, the presentation will comprehensively explore the intricate relationship between inflammation, immune system activation, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Attendees will gain valuable insights and actionable steps to address all aspects of health, paving the way for long-term sustainability.

Presentation includes:

  • Introduction: What you need to know about the brain-gut axis, inflammation, and immunity.

  • Introduction: How methylation, mitochondria, psychobiotics, and CBD relate to mental health and overall health.

  • Describe how stress affects the gut and self-regulation.

  • Review routines that facilitate sustainability and stability.

4. Self-Compassion Parenting

This presentation's content is particularly useful for parents who may feel caught in self-criticism, struggle with feelings of not being "good enough," or wrestle with guilt and shame. This presentation offers parents and caregivers important information on understanding self-compassion and its crucial role in family life, coping with stress, dealing with pain, and experiencing joy.

Presentation includes:

1.  Introduction: what is self-compassion? and what is it not?

2.  Provide information on the impact of self-criticism on our nervous system.

3.  Follow a step-by-step exercise on establishing a self-compassion practice.

4. Learn how to introduce your child to the practice of self-compassion.

5. Review self-compassion from the context of self/family sustainability.
